Civil Contingencies Secretariat
Conferences on Evacuation and Shelter, 21 and 23 March, 2006
On 21st and 23rd March the Civil Contingencies Secretariat (CCS) held
conferences on Evacuation and Shelter in London and Manchester.
The conferences were a chance for responders and those involved in
evacuation planning to hear about U.S. experiences. The two U.S. speakers
at the conference were instrumental in organising the reception of 69,000
evacuees in Houston in response to Hurricane Katrina and in organising the
evacuation of Houston as Hurricane Rita threatened - as such they were able
to share valuable learning with the wide range of delegates at the
conferences.
The conferences were also an opportunity to discuss some of the key issues
for the UK and input to forthcoming guidance on evacuation and shelter from
CCS.
Delegates to the conference were provided with the CCS's booklet Hurricanes
Katrina and Rita - A Perspective [PDF, 38 pages,
228KB] which provides a summary of key lessons from the U.S.
